Former Ghanaian-British basketball star Matthew Bryan-Amaning has called on the Ghana Basketball Federation to take decisive steps in steering the sport towards growth and success. Speaking in the wake of the Accra Knights’ historic achievement as the first Ghanaian team to compete in the Elite 16 Stage of the Basketball Africa League (BAL), Bryan-Amaning lauded the team’s efforts but shifted his focus to the Federation’s role.
“The talent is there,” Bryan-Amaning emphasized. “It’s about having the right people involved to get things on the right track, sorting out everything that’s got to do with the Basketball Federation. If the Federation wants to get things on the right path, the sport can really develop.”
Bryan-Amaning, who represented Senegal’s AS Douanes in the BAL before retiring from a 12-year professional career, pointed out that while Ghana’s basketball talent is evident, the lack of proper organization and leadership within the Federation remains a stumbling block.
The Accra Knights’ milestone highlights the growing potential of Ghanaian basketball on the continental stage, but Bryan-Amaning’s comments underline the urgent need for structural reform to sustain and build upon such achievements.
Fans and stakeholders hope that his call will spark action within the Federation, ensuring that Ghana’s basketball talents receive the support and opportunities needed to shine on the global stage.
