Hundreds of mourners from all walks of life are expected to throng the Brong Ahafo City of Berekum, the hometown of a former Deputy Minister of Education in-charge of Secondary and Basic Education, Kwabena Kyere, when his mortal remains is laid to rest on the 30th of this month.
Mr Kwabena Kyere, a teacher by profession and one-time President of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), died on the 6th of October after a short illness.
Described by many as a fine gentleman, Mr Kwabena Kyere until his untimely death was the Chairman of the Board of state ornaments manufacturer, Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) and also chaired the Governing Board of the Berekum College of Education where he brought his many years of experience as a teacher and education administrator to bear on both academic and administrative transformations at what used to be known as the Berekum Teacher Training College.
The late former deputy minister played several active roles in the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) under the regimes of former Presidents Rawlings and Prof. Mills, rising to become a member of the highest advisory body in the party, the National Council of Elders.
One group of people heavily hit by his death is the teaching fraternity. A professional teacher by all standards, Mr Kyere led the teachers’ body, GNAT for many years, as President, spearheading the agitation and advocacy for better working condition for the Ghanaian teacher and while serving as Minister, he championed the formulation of policies for the development and advancement of the education sector especially in relation to basic and secondary education. The people of Berekum where he hailed from, will forever miss him for his love for the country and his non-partisan stance in addressing issues despite his avowed loyalty to the NDC.
