Former chief of Wheta Traditional Area is fomenting trouble- House

Accra, Nov. 24, GNA – The Volta Region House of Chiefs has warned one Mr Vincent Yao Ashiakpor, to desist from activities that would pose a serious threat to the peace and security in the Wheta Traditional Area. A letter signed by Mr A.K. Ahiabah, Registrar of the House and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Tuesday said the security agencies in the Region have been advised to keep constant surveillance on his alleged nefarious activities of Mr Ashiakpor, including the intimidation and harassment of the new regent for the area.

It said Mr Ashiakpor was customarily nominated, elected and enstooled as the Paramount Chief of Wheta Traditional Area on March 14, 1961 under the stool name Togbui Ashiakpor IV and given government recognition and gazetted on Friday, January 7, 1966.

However, the letter said “in compliance with a request by the PNDC Secretary for Chieftaincy Affairs on December 18, 1986 your name among others was submitted to government as having served a term of imprisonment before, but had continued to exercise the functions of a chief in the area”. “As a result of having been tried by a court of competent jurisdiction in Ghana and having been convicted to terms of imprisonment, and having served a term of imprisonment before, the government withdrew its recognition from you as a chief.”

“The withdrawal of your recognition was announced on the national radio and published in the Daily Graphic of May 16, 1988, which resulted in your destoolment. You are therefore no longer a chief anywhere,” it said. The letter said available records indicated that “after your destoolment, one Togbui Ashiakpor V was enstooled. You gave your successor no peace until his death”. 24 Nov. 09
