Formation of Kwahu European Continental Union

Conference on “community development” ends

Hamburg-Germany—a 2-day conference “on community development” organized under the auspices of Hamburg branch of Ghana-Kwahu Associations ended here with the formation of European Continental Union, umbrella body of regional Kwahu organizations in Europe.

Dr. Abena Adjepong, Analytical Psychologist and President of Kwahu-Swiss organization, was unanimously elected Interim President, with Mr. Kwaku Asante of Great Britain as vice-President and Mr. Kwabena Asante, executive member of the Italian wing of the organization, as Secretary. Two additional delegates from Holland and Belgium were also appointed to assist the interim committee.

The conference charged the committee with the responsibility to organize the Union to embrace all members in the various European countries, and invested in them with powers of ‘subpoena’ to invite experts to assist them in their work.

Dr. Adjepong told the press later, that the committee will create awareness and encourage the formation of Union’s chapters, especially in the Scandinavian sector to involve citizens, living in Sweden, Norway and Finland. The American United Kwahu Union, which sent a three-member delegation, headed by Mr. Fred Dwamena, is to liaise between its organization and the newly former European Union, to ensure its success.

Over 30 delegates drawn from USA, Britain, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland, attended the conference, which aimed among others, to exploring means to run and implement sustainable development programs and projects in Kwahu traditional area, in the Eastern region part of Ghana.

The conference organized jointly by the Hamburg-Germany branch of the union also organized a “ball” to raise funds in support of an orphanage cited at Obomeng. The orphanage—Tomo Ni in Obomeng/Ghana is being run by a German NGO, under the direction of Mr. Walter Maurer and Christian Jürgens of Bremen Germany.

In his annual report to the conference, Mr. Maurer expressed his gratitude to the various regional organizations in Netherlands, England and in Germany for their support, in terms of finance, which is helping to run the orphanage, adding” thanks to the loyal support of the orphanage by our sponsors, it has succeeded in running the orphanage without bigger difficulties”.

He hinted that the board has so far utilized about 6,000 euros collected, for renovation of toilets, shower rooms and roofing, and appealed for computers and sewing machines to help train in inmates.
