Form environmental fun clubs to clean the beaches-Tema Mantse

Tema, May 13, GNA- The Friends of the Sea, Beaches and Inland Waters (FRISBIW), has proposed the formation of Environmental Fun Clubs in educational institutions to inculcate into school children, the benefits of keeping the beaches clean.

Nii Adjei Krakue II, Tema Mantse and Board Chairman of FRISBIW gave the advice when he donated four wheelbarrows and two dustbins to the caretakers of the ‘5 Beach’ in Tema Manhean on Tuesday, on behalf of the organisation.

He said such clubs would not only help fishermen to keep the beaches clean but would also embark on general environmental cleanliness.

Nii Krakue said the organization has sought for support from the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports to facilitate the formation of the clubs, noting that, its success would be beneficial to all Ghanaians as well as tourist.

He said it was unfortunate that most of the country’s beaches have lost its beauty due to its use as refuse dumps and places of convenience.

Nii Krakue said, to restore the beaches to their natural state, FRISBIW has set aside GH¢6,000 to purchase equipment to clean the coastline, “from Axim to Afloa”.

He called on the Management of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), to sanction vessels, whose crew dumps sewage into the sea, thereby killing the fishes.

The Tema Mantse also appealed to the GPHA to find suitable ways of removing the scraps of sunken and abandoned vessels from the sea. Mr Joseph Aubyn, Executive Director of FRISBIW said his organisations resolve to educate people on how to control the sanitation problems at the beaches was as a result of a survey of the coastline of the country, which indicated that it had been polluted by waste. Mr Aubyn said the survey revealed that, people use the beaches as places of convenience due to the lack of public toilets in the communities along the coast line and that the organization hopes to provide such facilities in the area.

Mr Emmanuel Adjei Adjetey, Caretaker of the ‘5 Beach’, who received the items, thanked the organization for the gifts and said the items would go a long in helping to maintain the beach.
