Foreign Minister Speaks On Preparations Towards UN Day Next Month

The Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs, Mr.. Kwamena Ahwoi, says the UN needs to adopt bold and imaginative measures to critically examine its structures and working techniques. He was speaking at a news conference in Accra to highlight activities line-up for the celebration of this year’s UN Day which falls on the 24th of this month. The theme for the celebration is: “Reforming the United Nations Systems to Meet the challenges of the 21st Century”. Mr.. Ahwoi said the reforms of the UN structures proposed by the Secretary-General deserve support of all because they are aimed at shaping the UN for the challenges that express the highest moral aspirations of humanity. The Minister also called attention to the fact that the International Community is prompt to react to conflicts in the rich industrialised countries, while some of the developing countries particularly Africa, fail to receive the same degree of response. He regretted that Africa continues to be marginalised in a world of rapid globalisation and liberalisation. Mr.. Ahwoi expressed Ghana’s support for the UN reforms at its just-ended 2nd session. Apart from the flat-raising ceremony to be held on the 24th of this month, other activities lined-up include seminars in the regions, clean-up exercises and nation-wide Christian and Moslem prayer sessions. There will also be a Model UN Security Council Session at the Aggrey Memorial Secondary School in Cape Coast on the 26th of this month.
