Footballer jailed seven years for defilement

Accra, June 3, GNA – A 19-year-old footballer who defiled and impregnated a 15-year-old pupil was on Thursday sentenced to seven years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court.

Abdul Basi Charley, pleaded guilty to defilement, and was convicted on his own plea.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector I.A.A. Ahor said both the victim and convict lived at Maamobi, an Accra suburb. Inspector Ahor said during August 2009, Charley proposed to the victim and started defiling her.

Prosecution said the victim became pregnant and informed the convict but he turned deaf ears to the issue.

Victim’s mother detected the pregnancy, confronted her and she disclosed that it was the convict who had impregnated her. Prosecution said victim’s mother reported the matter to the Domestic Violence and Victim’s Support Unit (DOVVSU), and a medical form was issued to the victim to the hospital for examination. The medical report indicated that victim was 26 weeks pregnant. The convict was arrested and after investigations charged with the offence.
