Footballer jailed for attempting to steal cocoa

Akim Swedru (E/R), March. 13, GNA- An 18-year-old footballer, who attempted breaking into the Akim Achiase Society of the Produce Buying Company Limited (PBC), to steal cocoa beans, was on Wednesday sentenced to 24 months imprisonment by a circuit court at Akim Swedru. Kweku Asiedu pleaded guilty to the charges of conspiring to steal, being on the PBC premises without lawful purposes and causing unlawful damage.

Two accomplices in the crime managed to abscond. Chief Inspector Benjamin Osei Kwadwo told the court presided over by Mr Edward Bosompem Apenkwa that the complainant, Mr Emmanuel Owusu is the Purchasing Clerk of the PBC Society at Akim Achiase and that for sometime now, thieves had been breaking into the society’s shed, to steal large sums of money and cocoa beans. Chief Inspector Kwadwo said on March 10, this year at about 0830 hours, the convict and two others, now on the run, went to Mr Owusu’s shed armed with a crowbar and forced the door opened. According to him, the complainant arrived at the scene for the day’s work, and realised that the door was opened and saw Asiedu whom he confronted.

He said after questioning Asiedu, he admitted committing the crime and was handed over to the Akim Swedru Police. 13 March. 08
