Football is a Calling: Ghanaian 17-Year-Old Defender

At just 17 years old, Graham Nii Ankamah Ankamafio is a towering presence on the football pitch, both literally and metaphorically. Standing at an imposing 198cm, the FC Copenhagen U19 centre-back combines his physicality with a maturity and skillset that belie his age.

For Graham, football isn’t just a sport; it’s a calling.

“Football is more than just a game for me. It’s a path, and I feel called to walk it,” he shares during a Zoom interview with JoySports.

Born in Denmark to Ghanaian parents, Graham’s rise began not in elite academies but on backyard patches of grass, where he mimicked his older brother and nurtured a love for the game. “When I was five or six, I saw my brother playing football in the garden. It looked fun, and I wanted to join in. Over time, he taught me the basics,” Graham recalls.

Raised by a single father, Graham quickly learned the value of perseverance and self-reliance. “Sometimes it was hard for my dad to take me to training, so from an early age, I had to help myself,” he says.

His journey has taken him from those humble beginnings to one of Denmark’s premier youth teams. Graham’s playing style is defined by composure, tactical awareness, and a quiet authority on the ball. He’s a defender who reads the game with precision, positions himself impeccably, and confidently steps into midfield to initiate attacks.

Despite his rapid ascent, Graham remains grounded. “I still have a long way to go,” he says. “I learn a lot from watching football, not just matches but even training clips. Anything that can help me improve, I study it.”

As he continues to carve out his path, Graham has set his sights on excelling in Denmark and, perhaps one day, donning the Black Stars jersey. With his faith and determination, he is a gentle giant poised to make a significant mark on the global stage.
