Food and Drugs Board seizes expired items

The Western Regional Regulatory Officers of the Ghana Food and Drugs Board in a two-day operation in the Jomoro and Ellembelle districts, seized large quantities of herbal and orthodox drugs, canned foods and biscuits found to be dangerous for human consumption.

Mr Albert Ankomah, leader of the team who made this known to the Ghana News Agency at Half Assini on Thursday, said the items were seized at Aiyinase in Ellembelle District and Half Assini, Tikobo Number one and Elubo in the Jomoro District.

He mentioned assorted drinks, provisions, toothpastes, confectionery, pharmaceutical drugs, locally manufactured Bitters and herbal medicines as some of the confiscated items.

Mr Ankomah said some of the items did not bear manufactured dates, manufacturers’ addresses, and labels, adding that some had exceeded their expiring dates while others were fake products.

Mr Ankomah said no arrest was made as the items were not found in large quantities that could warrant arrest and prosecution.

He however said owners of the affected stores were made to pay on the spot penalty, adding the confiscated items had been sent to the Regional headquarters of the FDB in Takoradi for destruction.
