Follow contract rules- Dr Anane

Accra, Feb. 26 GNA- Dr. Richard Anane, Minister of Roads and Transport, on Friday urged the Department of Urban Roads (DUR), to ensure that the rules and regulations governing the award of contracts were followed.

“You should endeavour to ensure that the rules and regulations which govern the service and your operations are strictly enforced to ensure value for money.”

The Minister was addressing the 11th Annual Conference of the Department in Accra.

The two-day conference, which had the theme: “provision of adequate urban road infrastructure-the key to efficient public transportation,” brought together participants from Accra, Tema, Koforidua, Cape Coast Sekondi-Takoradi, Tamale, Bolgatanga and Bawku.

It is expected to review the performances of the department last year and produce this year’s resolution, which would serve as a guide. Dr. Anane asked them to ensure that their operations, transactions and activities, were guided by the principle of good management. The Minister encouraged the department’s engineers and supervisors to exercise control over projects to ensure that contractors worked to specifications, and completed work on schedule.

He urged them to institute internal monitoring teams to instil the culture of self-criticism among themselves in their work. Mr. Alex Twumasi-Boakye, Director of DUR, said the department was designing routine maintenance schemes on selected arterial roads in Accra to ease traffic congestion on the roads.

He stated that the department was undertaking a study to plan and manage urban roads in the country.
