FOCOS to host renowned sports medicine and arthroplasty surgeon

FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital will host renowned US Sports Medicine and Arthroplasty (joint replacement) Surgeon, Dr. Michael Maynard and his team from the Hospital of Special Surgery (HSS) in New York, from the 21st to the 25th of November, 2017, at their facility in Pantang, Accra.

The renowned Orthopedic Surgeon, on his third mission trip to Ghana, will run a clinic and conduct specialized surgical procedures along with the FOCOS Orthopaedic team led by Dr. Joseph Ogyaadu. The mission trip is part of the FOCOS Hospital’s affiliation to HSS, where both hospitals share their expertise with each other.

Dr. Maynard is a US board-certified Orthopaedic surgeon specializing in the treatment of sports injuries and advanced arthroscopic techniques for shoulder, knee, and hip disorders as well as joint arthroplasty . He is a 1975 graduate of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland and later spent two years as an engineering graduate student and ROTC instructor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

From MIT he went onto Cornell University Medical College where he received his MD degree in 1985.
He completed his Orthopaedic residency training at Hospital for Special Surgery.

Thereafter, he continued at HSS for a fellowship year in joint replacement under Chitranjan Ranawat, MD, and Thomas Sculco, MD, and a second fellowship year in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery under Russell Warren, MD. Dr. Maynard was also Chief of Orthpaedics at Helen Hays Hospital form 2001 t0 2002 and held a similar role at Bronx VA Medical Center from 2003 to 2005.

Currently, he serves as Head Athletic team Physician at Marist College, a role he has held since 1991 and an active member of the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine. He practices at the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery and is among the first surgeons to develop skill and experience in the arthroscopic treatment of disorders affecting the hip joint.

Dr. Maynard has served as the Chief of Orthopedics at Helen Hayes Hospital and at the Bronx VA Hospital, where he was responsible for the education and supervision of HSS physicians who provide Orthopaedic care to patients.
