On September 18 (Tue), the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency assistance in kind (portable water tanks, blankets, and tents) worth about 13 million yen to the Government of the Republic of Ghana, which sustained a large-scale flood disaster caused by torrential rain.
1. According to the Government of Ghana, 18 people are dead, and about 260,000 people are affected, about 20,000 houses are destroyed and other infrastructure such as farmlands, roads and bridges are also seriously damaged because of the torrential rain.
2. At present, many of the victims in Ghana are being forced to lead lives under severe conditions in shelters in wide-ranging areas. The Government of Ghana has therefore made rehabilitation efforts of its own and also requested emergency assistance from the Government of Japan.
3. In response to the request of the Government of Ghana, the Government of Japan has decided to extend this emergency assistance from a humanitarian point of view to relieve these afflicted by the disaster and in light of the friendly relations between Japan and Ghana.
