Floods hit Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo District

Accra, Aug.19, GNA- Persistent rains at Bunkpurugu- Yunyoo, in the Northern Region, has caused massive floods leading to the destruction of property at the predominant farming area. River Oti and other water bodies at Bunbuna, Gimbale and Mozio have over flown their banks and submerged a number of communities.

Mr Thomas Akar, District Chief Executive of Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo, told journalists in Accra on Monday that a large number of homes, farms, food and livestock have been destroyed by the menacing waters, while huge track of roads have been made unmotorable. “The good news is that there have not been any reported deaths,” he said. Mr Akar said the recent ethnic conflicts in the district had deprived the District Assembly of the needed funds to tackle the problem and therefore appealed to National Disaster Management Organisation, other governmental and non-governmental organisations to come to the aid of the people. He said such intervention was necessary to avoid humanitarian crises and deepened the widespread poverty in the area.
