Himan (W/R), June 13,-GNA-Five hundred people have been displaced and properties worth about two billion cedis have been destroyed as a result of flooding at Himan near Prestea in the Wassa West District of the Western Region.
Mr. Kofi Ben-Blay, Wassa West District Officer, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), told newsmen at Himan on Wednesday when Mr. Albert Kwaku Obbin, Member of Parliament for Prestea/Huni-Valley constituency went round Himan to assess the damage caused by the flooding.
Areas affected included Bantama and Ankobra both suburbs of Himan where pit latrines were submerged with the sewage polluting the water. Mr Ben-Blay said NADMO counted forty structures including schools which were submerged and Pentecost church and some houses collapsed. He said currently the flood victims are putting up with their relations and some using the community centre in the town as their temporary home.
Mr. Obbin said a similar incident occurred in 1968 when River Ankobra flooded the area along the river.
He said the flooding was caused by high rainfall upstream and the damage caused was beyond the capability of the Wassa West District Assembly and pleaded with the national secretariat of NADMO, industries, philanthropists to come to the aid of the affected people.
Recounting his experience, Mr. Kwaku Ampong, a landlord said last Thursday between 1800 and 1900 hours, it started raining and the water flooded their houses about fifty metres away from River Ankobra. The affected people quickly parked some of their belongings and left the area, and abandoned the rest in the flood water.
