‘Fix Sankara traffic lights now’

Road users plying the Sankara end of the Ring-Road Central Highway have been complaining about the non-functioning of traffic lights that aide vehicular and pedestrian movement.

For two years now, the traffic light close to the AkoAdjei Interchange (Sankara Circle) has not been functioning hence causing road users to cross the highway at wrong locations instead of the designated Zebra crossing.

The situation is not only a problem for pedestrians but drivers that ply the route on a daily basis as well.

A careful observation of the situation at the under-pass of the interchange showed commotion, especially as drivers are always unwilling to stop for pedestrians to cross.

A unit vendor close to the road told our reporter that the traffic light has been dysfunctional for close to two years now and “this has resulted in many pedestrians being run-over by speeding vehicles while attempting to cross the road.”

The paper’s investigations showed that all the traffic lights from the north, south, east and west points of the road have also not been functioning for some years now.

This always causes pedestrians who attempt to cross the road to signal on-coming vehicles of their presence and beg before crossing the busy highway.

Interestingly, some passersby told Today that they had not noticed that there were traffic lights on the road.

Residents close to the road also claimed they had forgotten there is “supposed to be traffic lights on the roads” adding that “the authorities have turned a deaf ear to their complaints, so they have also given up on the traffic light issue because nobody seems to care.”
