Five GBC Directors face demotion

Accra – Unimpeachable sources at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) head office have revealed that five deputy directors appointed by the former Director-General of GBC, Dr. Kofi Frimpong, six months ago are to be demoted.

The sources said their promotion is in dispute, following claims by the corporation’s board of directors that they knew nothing about them.

However, Chronicle gathered that Kofi Frimpong did consult with the board chairman, Prof. George Benneh, whose approval finally came over two weeks ago.

In spite of the claims and counter-claims demotion letters were due last Monday for possible dispatch within the week.

The planned revocation of the appointments of the five deputy directors was communicated to them at a meeting in the fore noon of June 16, th is year at the office of the acting Director-General, Mr. Adanusa, in the presence of Prof. Benneh. According to the source, the affected directors were warned not to react to or let anybody know of the board’s decision until they had received their letters.

The five deputies, Messrs Godwin Avernogbor, Eric 0. Adjorlolo, Harrison Afful, Yao Dzekpo and Rosina Amaning, were promoted from the ranks of assistant director six months ago, after staying on their grades for years.

Our source said the planned move by the GBC board is unfair and against an existing labour law, which states that after working on a particular grade for over a stipulated period, a worker cannot be demoted.

Concerned GBC sources also view the impending exercise as a witch-hunt against those perceived as Frimpong’s men. “God save GBC if this is part of the changes acting Director?General Adanusa intends to bring to GBC,” a Chronicle source at the GBC in Accra said.
