Five districts to benefit from 806 boreholes

Mamponteng(Ash), Dec.21, GNA – Kwabre is among five districts nation-wide to be provided with 806 boreholes under the African Development Bank (AfDB) Rural Water and Sanitation Project (RWSP). Alhaji Ahmed Akwasi Yeboah, Kwabre District Chief Executive who announced this, said the project aimed at providing water and sanitation facilities to communities in a demand responsive and sustainable manner. Addressing the third ordinary meeting of the assembly at Mamponteng on Monday, the DCE noted that inadequate water and improper sanitation had resulted in water-borne diseases, which usually plagued many communities in the country.

Alhaji Yeboah said as part of the programme implementation, each beneficiary district was expected to contribute five per cent towards the cost of the borehole and the institutional latrine.

“Apart from the five per cent cost contribution by the district assembly, the beneficiary communities are also expected to contribute additional five per cent towards the provision of the facilities while the remaining 90 per cent is taken over by the project,” He added. He therefore, urged the assembly members to educate and sensitise the people in the various electoral areas on the need to participate in the project.

Alhaji Yeboah said this was crucial because inadequate toilet facilities in most areas had forced most of the residents to resort to open defecation resulting in water-borne diseases.

The DCE appealed to the assembly members to impress upon landlords the need to construct household ventilated improved latrines, which will ease the pressure on public toilets.
