Five people have lost their lives and 12 others were injured in a fatal collision between a truck and a mini bus at Waakrom junction near Yamoransa on the Cape Coast–Accra highway on Monday afternoon.
The DAF truck, registered AW 9548-13 and carrying 700 bags of rice, reportedly developed a fault before crashing into a Toyota Hiace mini bus with registration number GC 9728-21, trapping passengers inside.
According to ADOIII Abdul Wasui Hudu, Public Relations Officer for the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the Central Region, a distress call was received around 2:45 p.m. Rescue teams arrived to find the mini bus severely mangled, with several victims trapped.
“Our personnel managed to extricate five individuals from the wreckage. Unfortunately, four were pronounced dead at the hospital, while one remains in critical condition,” ADOIII Hudu said.
He added that local residents and eyewitnesses had already rescued 12 people and transported them to the hospital before GNFS arrived, but one of them later died. The remaining injured are receiving treatment at the Biriwa Health Centre.
The driver and another occupant of the DAF truck escaped without injuries. The accident caused major traffic congestion on the busy highway as emergency services worked to rescue victims and clear the debris.
ADOIII Hudu urged motorists using the stretch to exercise extreme caution to prevent similar tragedies.
