Fishermen call for a review of the Fisheries Act

Sekondi, Feb. 8, GNA – The Canoe Owners Association has

called on the government to review the Fisheries Act of 2002,

ACT 625 sub-section 139 because it is greatly affecting their

operations. A statement signed by Mr. Joseph Eshun, Secretary of the

Association, said the fishermen were not informed before the Act

came into being. “The government said there were no funds to cater for the

numerous fishermen to participate in the making of the legislative

instrument at that time”, the statement said. It said the laws were so rigid that if nothing was done about

them, they would kill the fishing industry. It said as much as the fishermen were calling on the authorities

to regulate the use of light in fishing, transhipment of fish, the use

of unapproved nets might cripple the industry.
