Fish processing centre inaugurated at Blekusu

Blekusu (V/R), Oct 19, GNA- A 124-million-cedi fish processing center for the Blekusu Women Cooperative Fishmongers and Marketing Society Limited (BWCFML), was inaugurated on Monday at Blekusu in the Volta Region.

The African Development Fund (ADF) and its local partner – the Integrated Productivity and Development Centre (INPROTEC) financed the project.

Major Courage Quashigah (Rtd), Minister for Food and Agriculture, who performed the inauguration the project, noted that food preservation to forestall post-harvest loses remained one major problem inhibiting attainment of sustainable food security in the country. He appealed to Ghanaian scientists to reflect on the traditional post harvest management practices being done by our forefathers and come out with simple equipment to solve post harvest problems in the country.

Maj. Quashigah who exhibited sachets of pepper, groundnut, herrings and unpolished rice being products of Malaysia, Japan and Germany said Ghana could achieve much through innovations in packaging to promote export of such items to other countries.

He said Government had achieved food security in the country saying the production had picked up at the Afife Rice Farms while vegetable had also improved considerably.

Maj. Quashigah advised members of the association to work hard to develop the union.

Mr Linus Koffie, the Ketu District Chief Executive (DCE) appealed to them to unite and work hard.
