First Lady leads fight against Anemia

An initiative to supply iron and folic acid to girls the National Girls Folic Acid Tablet Supplementation (GIFTS) has been launched in Sunyani.

The initiative is to supply iron and folic acid supplement to about 360,000 adolescent girls across the country.

The launching of the programme which took place at the Jubilee Park in Sunyani attracted, traditional rulers, politicians, directors of education, heads of schools and Municipal and District Chief Executives.

The First lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo launching the initiative called for support from all stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of the programme.

Mrs Akufo-Addo noted that anemia among teen girls is affecting their output in school and has over the years affected their academic work.

In Ghana anemia is on a high prevalence and we should not be proud of that .The initiative would iron and aid as a supplement to our daughters to reduce high anemia prevalence,” Mrs Akufo-Addo disclosed.

The First Lady also called for the involvement of principals of schools,youth clubs, teachers if the programme is to succeeded.

Adolescent girls at the basic and Senior High Schools across the Brong Ahafo Region are currently being supplied with the iron and folic acid supplement.
