First Lady inaugurates school

Accra, Dec. 22, GNA – The First Lady, Mrs Theresa Kufuor on Thursday inaugurated a multi-million cedi pre-school block built for toddlers at Adjiriganno, near Accra.

The project, which was financed by Mrs Olive Quartey, 71 year-old Jamaican lady married to a Ghanaian, has three classrooms, two three-seater lavatories and three washrooms. Mrs Quartey, who lives at East Legion, a nearby plush suburb, said the children of low-income areas also deserved good education to change their circumstances for the better. She said: “Education was the only service society could render to the less privileged so that disease, anxiety, ignorance could be overcome.

“Each one of us has the responsibility to make sure that we keep wandering children positively engaged otherwise the devil would find work for them.” She said: ” If I live long in my adopted home (Ghana) I would wish to see products of this school using their brains rather than their brawn to make a living.” Mr Kwadwo Opare Hammond, Member of Parliament for Adenta, said Mrs Quartey had offered her contribution at a time when the Government was mobilising all resources to improve on access and quality of Education. He said in a long while, schools in the area recorded 10 ones at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for the first time this year.

The member said this became possible because he initiated a programme, which involved the motivation of public teachers to do extra work with students. He said he also instituted scholarship schemes to help the brilliant but needy students to access secondary school education.
