Trabuom (Ash), Nov. 16, GNA – The First Lady, Mrs Theresa Kufuor, has called for a serious attention to be focused on the education of the girl-child.
She said this was necessary to provide the needed catalyst not just for women’s empowerment but the progress of the entire society. Mrs Kufuor was speaking at a fund-raising durbar held by ‘Afua Kobi Ampem Girls’ Secondary School at Trabuom in the Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma district on Sunday.
She noted that education was the hub around which economic, cultural, social and political development of every nation revolved and for that matter, it was important to ensure that both boys and girls were given equal access to education and the opportunity to prove themselves.
Mrs Kufuor asked parents and guardians to accept to share in the cost of the education of their wards by complementing government’s efforts through the provision of some school facilities.
She advised the students to be disciplined, respectful, diligent, adding that they should study hard to make their teachers and parents proud of them.
They should also stay away from early sex to avoid getting infected with the deadly HIV/AIDS disease.
Mrs Victoria Annan, Headmistress of the School, appealed for the construction of an administration block, a library, assembly hall, additional classrooms and bungalows to house teachers.
She called for urgent rehabilitation works on some staff bungalows that are now in deplorable state.
An amount of 900 million cedis was raised at the ceremony with The Trust Bank Limited contributing 50 million cedis.
