First ever IVF twins delivered in Kumasi

Medical history has been made in Kumasi with the delivery of the first ever twin babies – a boy and a girl, through in-vitro fertilization (IVF). This occurred at the Trustcare Specialist Hospital and Fertility Centre at South Suntreso, Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

According to the Clinical Embryologist, Mr Kofi Adu, their mother, aged 45, has been childless for more than a decade.

He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that there are many on-going multiple pregnancies yet to be delivered.

The Centre, the first to be established outside the cities of Accra and Tema, has been in operation for over two years.

He said they are grateful to God for using the facility as a channel of blessing to needy couples, adding that, the recent batch of patients including two from abroad have been treated and are all pregnant.

The IVF treatment, a specialized process that helps couples who for various reasons cannot achieve conception (pregnancy) naturally was introduced in Ghana by the Provita Specialist Hospital in Tema in the 1990s, and there have since been a number of IVF deliveries.

Incidentally, all of these had been at treatment centres in Tema and Accra.
