Fire razes down 100 shacks at Santasi

Wooden structures serving as homes to head porters (Kayayei) at Santasi Roundabout in the Ashanti region were razed down by fire Friday night, rendering a lot of the dwellers homeless.

According to a local reporter Elizabeth Sommuah, the inferno torched about 100 structures and the fire service had a tough time accessing the area.

The cause of the fire is unknown and no casualty has been recorded yet.

The fire fighters had to “call for reinforcement” to douse the raging fire which lasted for hours, Sommuah told Starrfmonline.com.

Several items including home appliances such as TVs, VCDs and cooking utensils were destroyed.

This is the second fire in less than a month in a slum of the Ashanti region. A few weeks ago fire ravaged homes of Kayayei at Dagomba Line and destroyed about 200 structures.
