A major fire has ravaged parts of the popular Maaha Beach Resort in Ghana’s Western Region, destroying several beachfront facilities and guest accommodations late on Wednesday evening.
The blaze, which broke out around 7 p.m. on 28 May 2025, is believed to have started in the kitchen of Vision Beach, a neighbouring resort, before rapidly spreading to the premises of Maaha Beach Resort. Fire consumed infrastructure near the resort’s main pool area before emergency services could contain it.
An eyewitness, who asked not to be named, described the chaotic scenes as resort staff and guests scrambled to safety while awaiting help from emergency responders.
“The fire didn’t start from our end but from Vision Beach. It started from the kitchen, moved through the front desk and crossed over to our side,” the witness revealed.
The delay in emergency response reportedly allowed the fire to cause significant damage before additional fire tenders from Axim and surrounding communities arrived to help.
No casualties have been reported at this time, and authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
Maaha Beach Resort is a well-known destination in the Ellembelle District, attracting both local and international tourists to its scenic beachfront and hospitality offerings. The extent of the structural damage is still being assessed, and resort officials have not yet issued a formal statement.
Local residents have expressed concern over the region’s emergency preparedness and the ability of firefighting teams to respond promptly to coastal disasters.
