Fire destroys supermarket

Winneba (C/R), Oct. 24, GNA – A fire outbreak at a supermarket near Don Bosco Catholic Primary School in Winneba at the weekend destroyed goods, mainly groceries, estimated at one billion cedis, the local Fire Service station said.

Also burnt partly was 20 million cedis cash in various denominations.

However, there were no casualty as the shop owner and her child, who were sleeping in the supermarket at the time, escaped before the blaze engulfed the place.

Mr Bartholomew Nketiah, Awutu-Effutu-Senya District Fire Officer told the Ghana News Agency that at about 0100 hours on that day, his office received a distress call indicating that the supermarket was on fire.

According to him, the call came late so the supermarket was completely burnt by the time the fire tender got to the location. The cause of the blaze is yet to be established, the district officer said.

Meanwhile, the shop owner, Mrs Janet Turkson, has appealed to the National Disaster Management Organisation, the District Assembly and philanthropic bodies to come to her aid.
