Fire destroys property at Kumasi Race Course market

Kumasi, Aug 11, GNA – Property worth several thousands of Ghana cedis were destroyed at the weekend when fire gutted some containers at the Race Course market in Kumasi.

Items destroyed included bags of rice, wheat, salt, corn mill, gallons of palm oil, vegetables and other personal belongings. Eyewitnesses told Ghana News Agency that the fire started at about 7.15 pm on Saturday and swept through some containers at the market. They pointed out that the fire was so intense that it caused panic among some traders and settlers who ran helter-skelter to avoid being trapped in the fire.

It took personnel of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) about two hours to bring the fire under control. Mr Evans Anim, Station Officer of GNFS, said there were no casualties and the cause of the fire was not known. 11 Aug. 08
