Fire destroys pipelines

Accra, March 20, GNA – Fire broke out at the premises of Aqua Vitens Rand Limited, managers of the Ghana Water Company Limited on Thursday destroying a 7,600 GH cedis bitumen covers of 20 transmission pipelines. The fire, which started at about 0930 hours, was brought under control after an hour by the timely intervention of the Ghana Fire Service.

Speaking to GNA in an interview, Nana Yaw Barima Barnie, the Regional Public Relation Officer of Aqua Vitens Rand said the outbreak was as a result of an on-going clean-up exercise to commemorate the World Water Day scheduled for Saturday, March 22 2008. He said in the process of burning the rubbish that had been gathered by the staff, the flame quickly caught the transmission pipelines. Nana Barima Barnie however, explained that the fire accident did not completely damage the transmission pipelines since the bitumen covers could be replaced, adding, “this will not affect our operation”.
