Filth engulfs Mankessim-Nkusukum

Residents of Nkusukum, a suburb of Mankessim in the Central Region, are at the threshold of cholera outbreak, following the refusal by waste management companies to clear heaps of rubbish that has engulfed the community.

Some of the residents told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that waste managers in the area had for the past three months, refused to clear the rubbish container, which is filled to the brim.

Madam Agnes Forson, a resident, said efforts by the community to get Zoomlion, the waste management firm in charge of lifting the rubbish and keeping the vicinity clean, had proved futile.

“Our efforts to get the authorities concerned to tackle this highly cholera prone issue has proved futile and there is no hope in sight,” she said.

Madam Forson said: “We are suffering from bad stench, uncontrollable presence of houseflies especially whenever it rains and we are getting scared,” she said.

She has, therefore, appealed to government and other stakeholders to put in all the necessary measures to help save the community from the predicament it finds itself.

Mr Joseph Agyapong also a resident, complained about the deplorable and outmoded public toilet situated near the rubbish container, and suggested the need for a modern facility to replace it.
