Fiema/Boabeng youth to protect forestlands against bushfires

Nkoranza (B/A), Nov. 15, GNA – The youth of Fiema and Boabeng in the Nkoranza District of Brong Ahafo have organised themselves to protect forestlands in the area against bushfires during the fast approaching harmattan season this year.

The measure would also protect the lives of the monkeys in the historical sanctuary established some years back in the twin-towns. Mr Benjamin Adu-Darko, Assemblyman for the area told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Nkoranza that, the youth have formed groups who move out everyday to work around the forest lands as their contribution to the Government and District Assembly’s programme to ensure bushfire free in the area this year.

Mr Adu-Darko appreciated the communal labour and voluntary spirit of the youth and pleaded with the other people from the catchment’s areas that bound the monkey sanctuary to organise themselves and assist the youth of Fiema and Boabeng to save the lives of the animals as well as human life and property.

The people should not carry naked fire to their farms or set fire in the farm during this harmattan period, he warned and urged them to be each other’s keeper by monitoring the movements of palm-wine tappers as well as honey hunters in their communities.

Meanwhile, the Nkoranza District Assembly is constructing a clinic for the people of Fiema-Boabeng to promote the health needs of people in the two communities as well as visitors, who would visit the sanctuary to enhance tourist attraction to the area.
