Female teacher trainees turn prostitutes over allowance withdrawal – TTAG

The national president of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG) Osei Kofi Daniel has claimed that the withdrawal of their allowance by government has turned some female students into prostitutes.

The Association threatened on Wednesday to embark on a nationwide strike if government fails to within one week, reinstate the allowance that has been scrapped and replaced with a student loan scheme.

According to Daniel, the removal of the teacher trainees’ allowance has resulted in about 40 per cent of level 100 students not being able to return to the colleges, while those who reported have been sent home, because they could not pay the exorbitant feeding fees.

He told Fiifi Banson, host of Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.3FM Thursday that some of the female trainees have no choice than to become prostitutes to be able to pay their fees.

“If you go to the female training institutions now, the ladies are turning to prostitution because they have no other option to make money.

“Meanwhile, when the allowance was in place there was no way something like this would happen,” Daniel said.

He added that there is no way they would return to the classrooms if the allowances are not immediately restored by government.
