Female student remanded over drugs

A 21-year-old student who was apprehended with 15 slabs of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp has been remanded into custody by an Accra Circuit Court.

Priscilla Duah charged with possession of narcotic drugs without lawful authority, pleaded not guilty.

Priscilla is expected to reappear on November 9 before the court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh.

Prosecuting Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Madunyo Nanegbe said the complainants are Police officers from the Highway Patrol Unit of the Ghana Police Service.

DSP Nanegbe said on October 20 this year, personnel from the Highway Unit embarked on routine checks on the Accra–Kumasi Road.

According to DSP Nanegbe at about 3:50 pm the team spotted a red Ford Transit Commercial vehicle with registration number AS 3887-17 with passengers on board approaching the towards Sekyere town area.

The prosecutor said the driver was signaled to stop for a routine check.

During the search, the prosecution said the team found Priscilla holding a brown leather bag containing 15 slabs of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

The prosecutor said in the accused person’s cautioned statement she admitted ownership and explained that the slabs were given to her by one Joseph of Koforidua to be sent to one Doreen at Konongo in the Ashanti Region.

DSP Nanegbe said the suspected drugs have since been sent to the Police Forensic Laboratory for examination.
