February 14 declared National Mathematics Day

Accra, Feb. 13, GNA – The Ghana Education Service has declared 14th February each year as National Mathematics Day, a statement from the Service said on Tuesday.

“On this day throughout the country, mathematics teachers in each of pre-tertiary institution will lead their students to mount exhibits showcasing between the mathematical concepts, students study and real life situation,” the statement signed by Joseph Kwesi Odom of the Public Relations Unit on behalf of the Director-General said.

The statement explained that the day had been set aside in conjunction with MathNED, a non-Governmental Organisation, to promote the use of mathematics for National Education and Development and to introduce activity-based learning in the school system.

Exhibitions are to be mounted on the 14th February for the communities to appreciate the study of mathematics.

The GES appealed to pupils and students to be innovative and creative, while teachers were being encouraged to use two of their mathematics periods each week to continue with the activities that put mathematics into practice.

“We wish to state that whatever problems teachers and students will meet should become challenges for them, since Mathematics is for problem solving,” the statement added.
