FDB cautions against Mama Queen Mackerel

Accra, July 27, GNA – The Food and Drugs Board (FDB) says it has through its post-market surveillance activities impounded 210 cartons of Mama Queen Mackerel in Tomato Sauce belonging to Jichi Ghana Limited. A statement issued on Wednesday in Accra by Dr Stephen Opuni, Chief Executive Officer of FDB, said Board had neither evaluated nor registered Mama Queen Mackerel in Tomato Sauce.

“FDB cannot therefore guarantee the safety and quality of Mama Queen Mackerel in Tomato Sauce for public consumption,” it said. The statement added that 93the sale of unregistered Mama Queen Macker= el in Tomato Sauce contravenes provisions of Section 25 of the Food and Drugs Law, 1992 (PNDC Law 305B)”.

It said the label did not indicate the name and address of the manufacturer, importer or distributor as well as the county of origin makin= g it impossible to trace the source of the product. The statement said the owner of the mackerel, who claimed he bought th= e consignment from someone who imported it from China through Togo, had been apprehended by the FDB and was helping with investigations. “Consumers are advised not to patronise the product as its safety cannot be guaranteed,” the statement added.
