Takoradi, Dec.31, GNA- The Takoradi Zonal Office of the Food and Drugs Board (FDB) has embarked on inspection of super markets and shops in Sekondi-Takoradi to retrieve expired and unregistered products. Mr John Pentsil, Zonal Officer in-charge of the Western and Central Regions, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Takoradi on Friday.
He said so far, expired and unregistered products have not been found on shelves of super markets and shops visited. Mr Penstil said those caught during the inspection to have defaced the expiry dates on products would be sanctioned.
He said all imported and locally manufactured products should be registered with the Board.
Mr Penstil said all products registered by the Board have the Board’s registration number embossed on the product. He said importers have to give the Board samples of products they intended to bring into the country for analysis before the granting of permit.
Mr Penstil expressed concern that the Board has not registered most of herbal preparations on the market.
He said some of the herbal preparations were being sold clandestinely and urged the public to assist the Board to track down the guilty ones. Mr Penstil said manufacturers of herbal medicine have to obtain permit from the FDB and register with it before undertaking mass production of the products for sale.
