FDA cautions media houses against promoting unlicensed products

The public relations officer for the Food and Drugs Authority, Mr. James Lartey has stated that media houses who advertise FDA regulatory product without the correct embossment on a letter from them will be sanctioned.

Mr. Lartey said sanction includes not less than 10 years jail term, or fine of GHC 7,500. He also stated that, parliament has passed an LI which permits them to fine culprits an amount of GHC 25,000 or a combination of both penalties.

Mr. James Lartey said they started about a month ago; they relaxed with it but will resume operations again. They are working in collaboration with the police CID to correct wrong doers.

The law states clearly that, FDA regulated products are to be approved before advertisement. We have monitors who only record an advert being aired without approval, and hand it over to the police CID to take it up and investigate it, Mr. Lartey added.

He further said the media houses who advertise have been cautioned to check out for the official letter attached to the embossment of products to be advertised. If such letters are not seen and the advert is aired, the media house in question will be made to face the law.

He said this in an interview with BREEZE NEWS while responding to the FDA’s fight against the media regarding airing unlicensed products, and caution media houses that it will sue them if they run advertisement on unlicensed products.
