Fashion designer jailed 70 years for robbing drummers

Kumasi, Jan. 18, GNA – Dauda Karim, a fashion designer, was on Monday sentenced to 70 years imprisonment by a circuit court in Kumasi for robbing two drummers of GH¢40,000 and mobile phones. Karim denied the offence and two accomplices are on the run.

Police Chief Inspector Archibald Kwesi Fandoh told the court presided over by Mr Justice Emmanuel Amoh-Yartey that the complainants live at Nkwantakese in the Afigya-Kwabre District whilst the convict resides at Mbrom in Kumasi. Prosecution said on August 26, 2007, at about 0400 hours, the complainants decided to visit Kofi Mensah, leader of a drumming group of which, they are members.

Chief Insp. Fandoh said when they got behind the Danny Pharmacy, an Opel Caravan taxi cab suddenly pulled up ahead of them. Prosecution said Karim and his accomplice, armed with locally manufactured pistols, jumped from the taxi and ordered the complainants to surrender their cash and cell phones. The victims complied with order and the armed robberies also took away a hand bag containing personal effects. When the complainants spotted Karim at Ashanti Town latter, they raised the alarm and he was arrested and handed over to the police.
