Farmers oppose mining activity

Goaso (B/A) May 23, GNA – Cocoa farmers in 14 communities in Asunafo North and South Districts in Brong Ahafo have vehemently objected to a proposed gold mining in the area by a Portuguese company.

Some of the communities are Wajakrom, Tweapiase, Boakyeasua, Manukrom, Nfante and Kwagyeikrom.

This was contained in a four-point resolution adopted at an emergency meeting by the farmers and signed by representatives of the affected communities addressed to the two District Chief Executives.

The farmers condemned the “secret” manner in which the proposed mining operation was allegedly endorsed by the traditional authorities in the area.

The petitioners said they entertained the fear that the mining operations would deprive the people of their livelihood as they depended on their farms.

“The likelihood of the mining activities polluting our streams, which we depend on as our source of drinking water and the danger to our health is very high”, they said.
