Farmers initiate one billion cedis road project

Yaakow (W/R) May 28- GNA- Three farming communities in the Ahanta West district of the Western region have initiated a road project to make the area accessible to other parts of the district, particularly Agona-Nkwanta the district capital.

The five-kilometre community-based project, estimated to cost one billion cedis, when completed would enhance the movement of goods and services from Azani, Farm-Gate and Yaakow to the rest of the district.

I is being supported by the District Assembly, which would contribute 10 per cent of the cost of the project, while the remaining amount would be borne by the communities.

Contract on the project had been awarded and work would include reshaping, gravelling and construction of about 12 culverts to make the area, noted for cash and food-crops production accessible.

The contract between the representatives of the communities, the District Assembly and the contractors; Eagle Star Construction was signed at a ceremony at Yaakow near Agona-Nkwanta on Friday.

Work on the road would begin within two weeks and scheduled to be completed by the end of the year Mr. Anthony Mensah, District Coordinating Director (DCD) told the GNA that farmers in the area were major producers of palm fruits and food-crops and transporting their produce to marketing centres had been a major problem because of the bad nature of the roads.

He said the road, when completed would enhance revenue generation to the Assembly and also accelerate poverty reduction among the people.

Mr. Mensah therefore urged the contractors to avoid shoddy work and endeavour to complete the job on schedule.

Representatives of Ahanta West District Assembly, Eagle Star Construction, Feeder Roads, Landor Consult; consultants and Nana Piedu II, Chief of Yaakow signed for their respective institutions and communities.
