Farmer jailed for stealing, escaping from lawful custody

Assin Fosu (C/R), Oct 26, GNA – Kwesi Tio, a farmer from Assin Foso in the Central Region was on Monday, jailed for 12 months for stealing and escaping from lawful custody by the Assin Foso District Magistrate court.

Tio, who pleaded guilty to the two charges but begged for mercy and was sentenced to six months imprisonment on each count. Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Asafo Agyei told the court presided over by Mr Joseph Blay that on September 16, 2005, the convict was arrested and placed in police custody for stealing a quantity of cassava valued at 500,000 cedis belonging to Madam Comfort Eshun.

Prosecution said while in Police cells pending investigations the convict was asked to go and empty the cesspit in the cells but he took advantage to escape but with the assistance of some people he was re-arrested and charged.
