Farmer fined one million cedis for assault

Akim Swedru, June 28, GNA – A 45-year-old farmer at Akim Adjobue in the Birim North District who assaulted a drinking bar operator and caused damaged to her property was on Monday fined one million cedis by the Akim Swedru Circuit Court.

The convict, Akua Janet, who will go to prison for six months if she fails to pay the fine, was also made to sign a bond to be of good behaviour.

The Presiding Judge, Mr Edward Kwame Bosompeng Apenkwa ordered that 300,000 cedis out of the fine if paid be given to the complainant, Miss Janet Opoku, 26, as compensation. Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Ben Osei Kwadwo told the court that on June 13, the convict’s husband went to Miss Opoku’s drinking bar to buy drink.

He said while at the bar a quarrel ensued between the convict’s husband and Miss Opoku. The Prosecutor said the following day the convict confronted Miss Opoku at the bar, assaulted her and broke some of the drinks in the bar.
