Farmer fined for threat of death

Hohoe, May 5, GNA – Charles Korku Gavi, a farmer at Liate-Wote, in the Hohoe Municipality, has been fined GH¢100 by a Hohoe Circuit Court for threat of death.

But in default of payment, he would serve a six-month jail term. Gavi, who pleaded guilty to the charge, was bonded to be of good behaviour for 12 months. He would pay a fine of GH¢500 in default of the condition or serve six months in hard labour in prison. Police Chief Inspector Mr Samuel Gbedemah, told the court, presided over by Mr Edward Apenkwa, that Gavi in 2005 sold some palm trees to Balawi Bisiga, the complainant. He said on April 9, this year, the complainant went to the farm to uproot some mature palm trees to commence tapping wine, but Gavi was seen harvesting palm fruits from the area he (Gavi) had already sold out.

Mr Gbedemah said the complainant expressed dissatisfaction about the conduct of Gavi, which was fiercely contested by the convict, threatening to kill him, if he dared to prevent him from harvesting the palm fruits. He said the convict and complainant were separated from an ensuing scuffle by witnesses in the case. Consequently, a report was made to the Police resulting in the arrest, prosecution and conviction of Gavi.
