Farmer fined for stabbing man over $0.25

Elmina, Apr 25, GNA – Kweku Awotwe, a 21-year-old farmer from Dabir, near Elmina, who stabbed a man because of a debt of 2,000 cedis he owed his wife was on Friday fined 8 million cedis by a district court at Elmina.

Awotwe, who pleaded guilty to unlawfully causing harm, will serve two years in jail in default and was also ordered to pay five million cedis to his victim as compensation or serve an additional 12 months in prison.

The case for the prosecution was that on April 14 Awotwe accosted the victim in the street over 2,000 cedis he owed his (Awotwe’s) wife. The victim’s nephew managed to convince Awotwe to let go off his uncle with a promise that he would pay the money. He dashed home and brought the money but Awotwe had left.

The nephew followed up to the night market where Awotwe’s wife was trading but she refused to accept the money.

When he was returning home he met Awotwe who picked up a quarrel with him and proceeded to stab him on the eyebrow, in the neck and ribs with a knife.
