Ejisu (Ash), July 14, GNA – A magistrate’s court at Ejisu on Monday fined Yaw Owusu, a 30-year-old farmer, 400,000 cedis for assault and resisting arrest.
He pleaded guilty to the charges and will serve six months in prison in default.
The court also ordered him to pay an additional 400,000 cedis as compensation to the victim or serve another six months imprisonment. Prosecuting, Police Inspector Nkansah Twumasi Ankrah told the court that at about 1300 hours on July 4, this year, the accused and his friend bought 4,000 cedis worth of “pito” from Rose Badi, the complainant at Ejisu.
He said after they had finished drinking, they paid the pito seller only 2,000 cedis and when she demanded the remaining 2,000 cedis from them, the accused and his friend told her that they would pay when they were about to leave.
Inspector Twumasi Ankrah said, however, that when the complainant asked them for her money when they were leaving the accused told her that he would pay her later, but she refused.
He said the complainant therefore held the cloth of the accused and told him that she would not let him go until he had paid her. This, Inspector Twumsi Ankrah said, angered the accused and he beat up the woman who lodged a complaint at the police station where she was given a medical form to attend hospital.
