Farmer fined 500,000 cedis for breach of peace

Cape Coast, July 14, GNA- A Cape Coast circuit court on Wednesday imposed a fine of 500,000 cedis on Robert Johnson, a farmer for offensive conduct and breach of peace.

Johnson, 55, who pleaded not guilty was also ordered by the court to within one month pay 350,000 cedis to the Apewosika-Kokodo development committee and the 500,000 cedis fine and drinks to the complainant Nana Kwaku Enu III chief of the area.

He would go to prison for three months if he fails to pay the fine Prosecuting Chief inspector Augustine Amonoo told the court that Nana Enu III passed a bye-law directing that any inhabitant who wanted to put up a structure for commercial use was to pay 500,000 cedis, which would be used in the development of the area.

He said during the month of January this year, Johnson who also hails from the area was seen erecting a kiosk and was accordingly summoned to appear before the chief and asked to pay 500,000 cedis but the accused pleaded for the amount to be reduced to 350,000 cedis and the chief agreed.

Inspector Amonoo said Johnson on February 13, this year, at about 1630 hours went to the house of the complainant and told him that he was no longer going to pay the money and that the he could take him to any place.

Inspector Amonoo said this did not go down well with the complainant who reported the matter to the police.
