Farmer burns to ashes

Agona Nkwanta (W/R), April 27, GNA – Tragedy struck Agona Nkwanta, in the Ahanta West District, on Easter Monday, when a farmer, Matthew Kwofie was trapped by a blazing fire, burning him beyond recognition.

It is believed he started the fire to prepare his farm, in anticipation of the rainy season, to sow his seeds and plant other food crops.

The Kwesimintsim District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Ayamga Aklogo Yakubu, confirmed the horrific incident to the Ghana News Agency in Takoradi, on Wednesday. DSP Yakubu said the farmer went to his farm early in the morning on Easter Monday to prepare the land, which would be used to cultivate various food crops.

It was during the clearing and burning of the weeded dry shrubs that he got mysteriously trapped in the blazing fire and was burnt beyond recognition. DSP Yakubu said the brother of the deceased went to the farm the next day when the deceased failed to return home, only to find the lifeless burnt body of his brother on the farm and reported the horrific incident to the Kwesimintsim Police. The corpse had been deposited at the Dixcove Government Hospital mortuary for autopsy. The police are however investigating the incident but suspect no foul play.
