Begoro (E/R), April 30, GNA – The Fanteakwa district of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has abolished the wholesale promotion of pupils in basic schools to address the poor academic performance of graduates of the JSS.
Addressing a meeting of heads of basic schools at Begoro on Wednesday, the District Director of Education, Mr Stephen Peter-Andoh said the wholesale promotion concept had been a disservice to most JSS graduates who upon completion of the basic education programme become street graduates.
He said non-performing pupils would be made to repeat their classes for one year in consultation with their parents to enable them improve upon their academic performance.
Mr Peter-Andoh warned that final year students who resort to truancy after registration for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) would be withdrawn and not permitted to sit for the BECE.
He noted with concern that such truant students perform poorly, which discredits the district, and called for an effective use of instructional hours to benefit the pupils.
The Deputy District Director of Education, Mr Mike Ansah Yeboah, urged JSS teachers to collaborate with primary school teachers to improve the quality of teaching and learning, which would affect their outcome at the JSS level.
He also asked primary school teachers to put in their maximum efforts to lay strong academic foundation for the pupils, especially at the kindergarten level now that it has been brought under the GES.
