The remains of 18-year-old Ghanaian student, Nana Agyei Oduru Ahyia, have arrived in Ghana following his untimely and controversial death in Latvia last month.
Nana Agyei, who began his Electrical Engineering (Adaptronic) studies at Riga Technical University in July 2024, died on June 4, 2025. Latvian authorities initially reported that he fell from the sixth floor of his apartment building on Baznicas Street in the capital, Riga. However, his family strongly contests the claim, citing inconsistencies and a voice note sent days before his death in which he alleged he had been poisoned.
“We received the news that he had fallen to his death, but we refused to accept that. There is no way he would take his own life,” said Sarah Nimli, a spokesperson for the family.
According to her, efforts to seek clarity from both the Latvian police and the university yielded little response. “I wrote to the Foreign Ministry, the school, and even reached out to the police. But their silence and reluctance to engage felt like a cover-up—especially as Latvian nationals were reportedly involved,” she added.
The family sent a relative to Latvia to press for information, later joined by a representative from Ghana’s Embassy in Berlin, which has jurisdiction over Latvian matters. Despite these efforts, the family claims they have yet to receive any meaningful update or cooperation from either local authorities or Ghana’s diplomatic mission.
Latvian police have maintained that investigations are ongoing, but the lack of transparency has deepened the family’s concerns.
The family is calling for a full, independent investigation to uncover the circumstances that led to the young student’s death, describing their pursuit of justice as far from over.
